YOUTH MINISTER’S MOMENTS STUDENT DRESS GUIDELINES The other day all parents of students of the Gateway Senior High received their child’s report cards and a letter on the school’s student dress guidelines. This letter stressed to parents and students the importance of “dress and personal appearance being of such character so as not to disrupt or detract from the educational environment of the school.” The Gateway High School has a dress code because they know how important a person’s type of dress and appearance is and how it can detract or disrupt the educational program of the school. Personally, I am so glad that the high school administration realizes how important this issue really has become in our world today! Also, I think it is very interesting what they allow and do not allow, and if that’s their standard, shouldn’t Christ’s Church have standards that are above the world’s? If proper dress is needed at school, then it should be needed when attending the services at church and youth activities, camp, VBS, etc. If you want a copy of the letter please let me know. I would like to share some of the student dress guidelines with you. Requires that shirts/blouses/trousers be properly buttoned in accord with the design. Prohibits the wearing of extremely short shorts. Prohibits the wearing of spandex clothing, biking pants, and exercise clothing. Prohibits the wearing of midriff-baring tops and spaghetti strap tops. Prohibits the display of slogans or advertising on clothing which, by their controversial or obscene nature, disrupts the educational setting or is sexual in nature and offensive. Prohibits the wearing of any clothing that advertises or promotes the use of drugs, alcohol, tobacco products or violence.
As spring and summer rapidly approach let’s make sure our high standards of proper modesty and decency prevail at all times in our dress. We do not want the world’s standards of appropriateness to supersede the church’s, do we? May it never be! The church should have the high standards of God’s Word and never fall to the standards of the world! Have a great day and remember who we are and how we should properly dress. In His Service, David
