Introduction: Today we are going to talk about the importance of friendship.
Proposition: Let's see what we can learn about friendship from God's Word
I. An example of friendship
A. Jonathan loved David
B. Jonathan made intercession for David
C. Jonathan refused a kingdom for David
D. Jonathan risked his life for David
E. Jonathan wanted David to be king
II. The scriptures teach us duties of friendship. Proverbs 18:24
A. You should be trustworthy. Psalms 55:12-14
B. You should hold things in confidence. Proverbs 11:13
C. You should overlook flaws. Proverbs 17:9,17
D. You should be there in time of need. Proverbs 27:9-10
E. You should respect their privacy. Proverbs 25:17, 27:14
F. Friends are encouragers. Eccelesiastes4:9-10
G. Friends will give us counsel and advice. Proverbs 27:5-6
H. Friends will challenge our potential. Proverbs 27:17
Lastly: The ultimate friendship says, "I'm willing to die for you". John 15:13
Conclusion: God wants you to have at least one friend who will be the kind of friend that Jonathan was to David and David was to Jonathan. Through Christ you can obtain that ultimate commitment
